Overview of the HELPS Program

The Project Manager will be an integral staff member for a Charlotte-based project that utilizes the Helping Early Literacy Skills with Practice Strategies (HELPS) Program to advance elementary-aged students' literacy development. The HELPS Program is one of several programs offered by Helps Education Fund and is currently our most widely used program. Designed to assist educators with improving students’ reading fluency and confidence as readers, HELPS has more than 10 years of research documenting its ability to improve students’ foundational literacy skills. Although HELPS is used internationally, tutoring with this program has been growing within Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) since 2018. Over the past three years we have continued to increase our impact within CMS, particularly within schools serving a high percentage of students with economic disadvantages. Our next Project Manager will work with our growing team so we can support even more CMS students with their reading development. 

 

Overview of the Position

The HELPS Project Manager will be a part of a team that works both cooperatively and independently to increase the impact of HELPS programming in the Charlotte area. This position will provide training, coaching, and evaluation support to staff and volunteers who implement HELPS. Simultaneously, the HELPS Project Manager will work to deepen and expand community and agency relationships that will impact the success of HELPS implementation and scaling goals. This position is responsible for building school relationships, overseeing logistical supports, and maintaining a positive environment for tutors in participating schools. Overall, this position will have its hands in cultivating, shaping, and ensuring implementation effectiveness in an effort to deepen our impact of HELPS Programming in the Charlotte area. The HELPS Project Manager will work closely with the Project Director and the Quality Assurance Director.

All work with schools, tutors, and students will be done virtually until the end of this 20-21 school year. After the school year, pending CMS safety guidelines around COVID, there could be at least some in-person activity for some of our staff. 

 

Overview of Main Duties:

  • Initially manage a portfolio of 10-15 schools in an effort to ensure at least 30 students per school are correctly selected to receive HELPS programming and then receive the program as intended throughout the school year. 
  • Communicate and collaborate with school administration and staff throughout all stages of school-level HELPS implementation.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in using the HELPS Program. 
  • Support and supervise HELPS Implementation Coaches.
  • Collaborate with Tutor Manager(s) with tasks such as tutor communication and development.
  • Assist and collaborate with community partners, schools, and volunteers who are delivering the HELPS program to ensure they are maintaining fidelity and obtaining capacity to sustain the program successfully. 
  • Coordinate HELPS program schedules that includes: staffing and school schedules, assessment and evaluation schedules, and data collection schedules.  
  • Work with other Helps Education Fund leadership to develop a longer-term vision for programming and growth. 
  • Assist with grant applications, letters of inquiry, proposals, and reports in coordination with other Helps Education Fund leadership and staff. 

 

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • Previous experience in non-profit or educational leadership, including demonstrated success in evidence-based program implementation, community outreach, and cross-sector collaborations
  • Demonstrated commitment to educational equity  
  • Exceptional organizational abilities and attention to detail, with attentive follow-through on simultaneous projects  
  • Affirming, empowering, and listening-based leadership style, with a strong sense of self-direction and accountability to the mission and values of the organization  
  • Compelling, authentic, and clear verbal and written communications skills  
  • Ability to work independently, handling multiple tasks and completing them in a thorough, accurate and timely manner  
  • Experience working with children and/or educators in school-based settings

 

Requirements:

This position requires 3-5 years of relevant work experience in education, non-profit management, public administration and/or a Bachelor’s or advanced degree in a related field. Experience or knowledge of evidence-based program implementation is required, as is strong written and verbal communication skills. Technologically proficient in office technology systems including PowerPoint, Excel, MS Word, email, Google Drive, Zoom, and social media.

Through collaborative partnerships locally, nationally, and internationally, we provide low- or no-cost programs and services that meaningfully improve student learning. These programs and services are collaboratively developed and rigorously evaluated, creating a true bridge that connects educational research and practice.

Although Helps Education Fund began in 2010 with only a small group of volunteers, we have grown to a diverse team of 20+ staff -- each of whom is passionate about improving educational equity through community engagement and authentic partnerships. We’re now looking for the right person to join our team to strategically advance our fundraising and programs, and help to make our work and impact even stronger.
